Last month we had the pleasure of the delightful folk-pop duo, The Submarines, popping by the Shazam studio. The duo (John Draonetti & Blake Hazard) came in to give us a wonderful and stripped back performance of their single ‘Shoelaces’, taken from their latest album ‘Love Notes/Letter Bombs’.

‘Love Notes/Letter Bombs’ is the anticipated follow up to their 2008 release ‘Honeysuckle Weeks’ which featured the track ‘You, Me & Bourgeoisie’ which was used on Apple iPhone’s 3G television ad campaign.

Agnes Obel – Riverside

Recently the talented Danish singer/songwriter, Agnes Obel, joined us at the Shazam Sessions studio and graced us with a beautiful rendition of her song ‘Riverside’. The track has previously featured in Thomas Vinterberg’s film ‘Submarino’, TV shows ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and earned her a Robert Award (Denmark’s equivalent of the Oscars) for Best Song Of The Year.

As an adolescent, Obel was influenced by a blend of the classical greats, folk music like Jan Johansson and the sounds of Roy Orbison. After discovering the music of Portishead and Elliott Smith as a teenager, Obel began writing her own piano-based songs and in 2006 she moved to Berlin to begin recording an album. Agnes’ self produced and performed debut album Philharmonics was released in October 2010 and has since been certified double platinum.

MEN – ‘Off Our Backs’

We were lucky enough to have the fantastic band MEN, featuring Le Tigre member JD Samson, in the Studio.

MEN describe themselves as an art and live performance collective and are as controversial and confrontational in their lyrics as you would expect from one of feminist electro-clash’s biggest legends.

Performing two tracks for us, here is the first one, ‘Off Our Backs’ – a song about love and money according to JD. The video is a one off exclusive performance and features some of the best dancing our studio has ever seen!

As well as sharing their musical genius with us, the band were kind enough to bring some copies of the the single ‘Off Our Backs’ on 7″ vinyl and a few signed T-shirts to give away. For a chance to win one of these fantastic prizes please email competition@shazamteam.com with the answer to the following question.

JD Samson is also a member of which band?

1. Sleater Kinney
2. The National
3. Le Tigre

Foxy Shazam ‘Oh Lord’

October 18th, 2010

A big hand for the fabulous Foxy Shazam! Our eccentric namesake rockers recently stopped by Shazam HQ to perform a live acoustic performance of their infectious new single ‘Oh Lord’, and we chatted with the band before they headed off to support epic Welsh group Lost Prophets at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire.

Front man Eric Nally describes Foxy Shazam as “natural born entertainers” – we suggest you watch the session and see for yourself!

Foxy Shazam are a six piece cabaret rock band from Cincinnati and have been rocking the world since 2004. Often described as glam, gospel and even post-hardcore, their influences include Marvin Gaye, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen and maybe just a touch of Queen. All in all, Foxy Shazam are pretty hard to pigeon hole!

The band’s new album, the self titled ‘Foxy Shazam’, is out 25th October.

More exclusive Shazam Sessions will follow over the coming months… we’ll keep you posted!

The videos can be seen both on the “Shazamvideochannel” on Youtube and on our blog!
