MGMT ‘Congratulations’

When MGMT released their second album ‘Congratulations’ this year, many were quick to point out that it didn’t boast a stand out pop track to the standard of ‘Kids’ or ‘Time To Pretend’. However, the slow burning album has done nothing to dent the bands popularity - with the band only being kept off the top of the Billboard charts by the puzzling phenomena that is Justin Bieber.

Their latest single is the title track from the album, a mellow acoustic number that recalls ‘Weekend Wars’ from ‘Oracular Spectacular’. In the head puzzling video, the duo follow a slowly disappearing, unrecognisable creature throughout the desert. The bizarre animal - which resembles an outcast from Jim Henson’s workshop - provides another head scratching twist in their career. One thing’s for certain, they clearly refuse to let the pressure of being on a major label compromise their artistic control.

The band embark on a huge tour in September across the UK, Europe and USA. For more info, head to their MySpace.

MGMT’s new album, ‘Congratulations’, is undoubtedly one of the most eagerly anticipated records of 2010 and one of the biggest predicted sellers of the year. However, any forecasts about the success of the album have failed to deter the New York band from streaming the whole thing from their website – a move that could arguably eat into record sales.

The decision to stream the album came after material was leaked via peer to peer sites. As MGMT say themselves, the group actually wanted to go one step further than streaming their new work :

“Hey everybody, the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us. We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn’t make sense to anyone but us.”

‘Congratulations’ will be released April 12th and is available to purchase from iTunes.

One of the most eagerly awaited releases of 2010, the follow-up to Brooklyn duo’s MGMT groundbreaking debut ‘Oracular Spectacular’, is beginning to take shape. Hardcore fans will already be familiar with the album’s title, ’Congratulations’, and the colourful, cartoon-inspired cover. Added to that, there will also be a limited edition package that’s set to feature a special coin, a 32-page booklet and a scratch-off front cover.

Now the time has come for the first taster, which the band is giving away through their website. ‘Flash Delirium’ continues the duo’s taste for mixing diverse musical influences into the same track. This time paying tribute to both  Phil Spector’s epic wall of sound and the current batch of new lo-fi and DIY artists. The results, if not as immediately catchy as ‘Kids’ or ‘Time To Pretend’, may be as rewarding after a just few listens.

‘Congratulations’ will be released on April 13th.
