Mary J. Blige is R&B royalty. Since dropping her debut album ‘What’s the 411?’ way back in 1992, ‘The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul’ has shifted more records than a forklift driver at the Amazon warehouse and collected more Grammys than she can probably fit in her house. But after nearly two decades on the scene, she’s still got plenty to say.
Hooking up with the so-hot-right-now Drake, ‘Mr Wrong’ is a slice of classic Blige. As has so often been the case in her long career, she’s chiefly concerned with maters of the heart, namely her slightly unreliable choice in men. She sums it up pretty well: “Bad boys ain’t no good/Good boys ain’t no fun/Lord knows that I should/Run off with the right one.” While it’s a bit of a slap in the face for all the good boys out there, it’s a line that will ring true for a lot of people. That’s kind of Mary J Blige’s thing.
The track is taken from her new album called – deep breath – ‘My Life II…The Journey Continues (Act 1)’. True, it’s a bit of a mouthful, but we’ll cut the lady some slack. By harking back to her 1994 release ‘My Life’, which has a good claim to being her biggest and best-loved record, she’s showing that she’s still committed to producing music that can stand up against her stellar earlier work. Considering that many artists are pretty much running on autopilot 20-odd years into their career, it’s refreshing to see someone still committed to doing things properly. All hail the Queen!
