Jason Derulo – It Girl

September 2nd, 2011
Comments Off

Jason Derulo has packed a great deal into a very short time. At the age of 16 he was writing songs for esteemed artists such as Lil’ Wayne and Diddy. His eponymous debut album, released in 2010, spawned five hit singles and saw him support Lady Gaga on her Monster Ball Tour. Now he’s readying his second LP, ‘Future History’, set to drop at the end of September.

The second release from his forthcoming record, ‘It Girl’ finds Jason Derulo in a loving mood. He’s met a lady and it’s just possible she could be the one. Being with her is better than winning a Grammy and he’d very much like it if she would give him ’25 to life’. All these sweet nothings are ably complemented by gently strummed guitars and Derulo’s pleasingly acrobatic vocals. As modern love songs go, ‘It Girl’ has all the bases covered. To its considerable credit, the song even resists the urge to throw in a near obligatory key change in the final chorus. Full marks, Mr Derulo.

In recording ‘Future History’, Derulo claims to have written somewhere in the region of 150 songs before settling on the final tracklist. “’Future History’ is my greatest accomplishment thus far in my life,” he told Direct Lyrics. “I’m not going to mention the collaborations, because there’s a huge surprise. But there are so many different faces on this album; it goes from straight urban to having super pop, and having rock influence, to having euro-dance influence. It has something for everybody, and it’s really exciting because I feel like I’ve never done something this great.”

Jason DeRulo – Don’t Wanna Go Home

June 3rd, 2011

Florida native DeRulo (a simplification of the original  ‘Desrouleaux’) came to the music industry ready equipped with the reputation of an artistic overachiever. Schooled in opera and ballet he honed his skills as a songwriter for Cash Money Records before being snapped up by producer J.R. Rotem for his Beluga Heights label, home to the likes of Sean Kingston and Mann.  With Beluga Heights and Warner Records financial clout behind him DeRulo launched his assault on the charts and immediately hit the jackpot, his first single ‘Whatcha Say’ took out the Billboard #1 spot followed by a further two consecutive top ten entries. His pop/R&B crossover song-writing skills combining with his keen voice ensured his debut self-titled album became a worldwide hit and now he’s back with the lead single from the follow-up ‘Future History’. ‘Don’t Wanna Go Home’ takes inspiration from a number of sources and mashes them up into a coherent whole. Kicking off with Harry Belafonte’s ‘Banana Boat Song’ it drops into the riff from the Robin S club classic ‘Show Me Love’ adding a sprinkle of Ke$ha and Lil’ Wayne on the way. It may not be the most original track in town but DeRulo is on record as stating he wanted to write a ‘feel-good’ song and few would argue with the sentiment.

Shazam Meets… Jason Derülo

March 3rd, 2010

Currently riding high at the top of the UK charts with his second single, ‘In My Head’, US R&B rising star Jason Derülo looks set to make his mark on 2010. The singer has been on our radar since his debut single ‘Watcha Say’ dominated the Shazam US New Release Chart in mid 2009. Despite only releasing two singles so far, Derülo has been in the song writing game for the past few years, writing for the likes of Diddy, Birdman, Sean Kingston and Cassie. Nevertheless, it was evident that the singer would eventually strike out on his own after spending most of his life studying music and performance.

His eponymous debut album was released this week and is currently firmly in the iTunes top ten. Luckily we managed to grab a few spare minutes of his time and find out about his future plans, what happened when he toured with Lady Gaga and whether he had firsthand experience of any of P.Diddy’s legendary parties…

‘In my Head’, your latest single, is at number one at the moment – a great achievement for your second single! Tell us a little about the track and what influenced it.

JD – “With this track I wanted to explore the rock side of things a bit more, because I’m a music lover and I wanted to infuse all kinds of music. So JR (Producer JR Rotem) came up with this wonderful beat with the rock guitars/drums and I had an idea to write a song about my imagination. I have a very vivid imagination; everyone has fantasies, so I wanted to explore it. You know meeting someone for the first time, a lot of the time I have fantasies (laughs) that go through my head so I wanted to explain it; basically it’s an invitation to my imagination”.

You mentioned the track has a slightly rockier edge than your previous single, what kinds of influences are there across the album?

It’ll be the same thing, always man – always a reinvention. Those (singles) are two totally different songs, one has an indie electro sample in it and the other has a rock influence. That’s what the album is. It’s a music lover’s album – if you like all kinds of music then this album is for you. There’s so many genres implemented to create this new pop sound, it’s all deep rooted in pop but there’s many influences.

In ‘Watcha Say’ you sampled the Imogen Heap song ‘Hide And Seek’ – not a track you would immediately associate with an R&B artist like yourself. How did you discover it?

Like I said, I’m a music lover, man. I’ll just go into the record store and pick up some random CD, just because I’d never heard it before. I’m just so curious, I’m a student of music, I wanna continue to discover new things.

Have you had any feedback directly from Imogen Heap herself?

Yeah she’s excited, she’s excited her song got to take a new flight you know.

Jason DeRülo releases video for ‘In My Head’

January 27th, 2010
Comments Off

Jason DeRülo shot to fame in the second half of last year with his super smooth and ridiculously popular R&B hit, ‘Watcha Say’. The track dominated radio playlists worldwide and was almost omnipresent in the upper echelons of Shazam’s charts for most of 2009. It was always going to be a tall order for a relative newcomer such as DeRülo to follow up the huge success of ‘Watcha Say’, but the Miami born singer looks to be well on the way to succeeding with his follow up single ‘In My Head’. The record is rapidly rising up the US Billboard chart, currently residing at #38, and is gaining plenty of radio play in the UK in anticipation for its release on 22nd Feb.
As you would expect, ‘In My Head’ doesn’t deviate too far from Jason’s previous foray into smooth soul. Produced by JR Rottem - a man whose work with JLS, Iyaz, Leona Lewis and Sean Kingston has given him something of a midas touch of late - ‘In My Head’ is a another example of DeRulo’s skill with a radio friendly chorus. The video is also likely to go down well with urban music fans and features some serious dance moves from DeRulo and an easy on the eye female cohort.
