Last week we squeezed ourselves into the sold out Camden Electric Ballroom, to see Girls. The group, originally a solo project for Christopher Owens demos, have now added three backing singers to their ranks. Fitting due to the gospel influenced tracks on their latest album ‘Father, Son, Holy Ghost’.

San Francisco based band Girls are set to release the fantastic ‘Morning Light’ single from their critically acclaimed debut album. The track is one of the more frantic from the album, recalling the intoxicating, feedback drenched melodies of My Bloody Valentine. It also featured on Rough Trade’s essential ‘Indiepop 09’ compilation, along with the likes of Los Campesinos!, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and Love Is All. The song is now available through iTunes here.

Girls debut album ‘Album’ may well be shaping up to be one of the records of the year. Hailing from San Francisco, Girls craft blissful ditties that recall the lo-fi grunge of The Lemonheads but also the saccharine melodies perfected by Brian Wilson. Lead singer Chris Owens vocal delivery drifts somewhere between a young Elvis Costello and Dinosaur Jr’s J. Mascis and tonight he has the rammed London crowd hanging off his every word. Read more…
