
With his track ‘Unorthodox’ taking root at the top of our UK New Release Chart, now is a particularly good time to speak to Wretch 32. After his debut single ‘Traktor’ introduced us to his mish-mash of hip-hop and electronica we were eager to hear more. ‘Unorthodox’ then took things to another level: when the East London rapper cheekily borrowed the hook from Stone Roses’ classic ‘Fools Gold’ and brought in his mate Example on vocals a run at the mainstream beckoned.
But it hasn’t been a case of overnight success for Wretch 32. Hailing from the same area as fellow rappers Chipmunk, Skepta and Devlin; Wretch put out his first mixtape in 2006 and has spent the last few years honing his skills in studios and on pirate radio stations. After being picked up by the influential dance label Ministry Of Sound, the rapper is now putting together his first album.
We spoke to Wretch about collaborating with Example, his plans for his debut album and why you should never mention the #1 spot around him.

This week Jay-Z claims the number one spot in the UK Pre-release Tag Chart for the first time this year with his latest single, ‘Run This Town’. New releases come from Example and Shakira – whose track ‘She Wolf’ pre-empts the release of her new album that’s set to include contributions from Pharell, Wyclef and Lady Gaga’s ‘so hot right now’ producer, RedOne.
