Dev – In The Dark

Even if you’ve never heard of Dev, you’ve almost certainly heard her. Her song ‘Booty Bounce’ was sampled by Far East Movement on their bazillion-selling mega-smash ‘Like a G6’, a track that was just about impossible to avoid last year. The track that was sampled was pretty big in its own right too, with its inventive video clocking up millions of YouTube hits.

She’s also found time to collaborate with Tinie Tempah, Timbaland and the mighty JLS, as well as put together her debut album. Working with her usual production team The Cataracts, who discovered her through her MySpace page in 2009, ‘The Night the Sun Came Up’ is due out in November. Dev is already promising big things.

“I think the environment that The Cataracs grew up in Los Angeles plays a distinct role in the different sound in production,” she told Digital Spy. “I also think my voice is very interesting and different – it’s weird as hell! So when we put our two quirkiness’s together, the result is quite nice. We’ll see how it does, but I’d like to think it differs from what else is out there. Our personalities in general – I don’t think you can compare that to anyone else out there and that comes across on the album.”

As for ‘In The Dark’ itself, the track is a typically steamy ode to the joys of a little bit of bump ‘n’ grind and has the potential to be another omnipresent feature in the clubs and on the airwaves.

New Boyz – Backseat

New Boyz came to fame in the late ‘00’s through the California based ‘jerkin’ scene – a dance and rap movement based on locked dance moves and tight trousers. Their debut single ‘You’re A Jerk’ capitalised on the hype for all things ‘jerk’, becoming a viral hit and climbing to number 24 on the Hot 100. To many people’s surprise they proved they weren’t a one hit wonder when their follow-up single went two places higher. However, there was a definite danger that the duo would fade out as quickly as the flavour of the month dance craze inevitably would. So, in an inspired move, the boys teamed up with fellow Californians The Cataracs and long-time Cataracs contributor, singer Dev. The Cataracs had just exploded onto the scene by providing the muscle behind the Far East Movement’s ‘Like A G6′; a track which was almost inescapable through most of 2010. ‘Back Seat’ is consequently a lot more poppy than previous New Boyz output but the combination works well with Dev adding some chorus frills and the Boyz adapting to the new world of beefy electro with ease. Taken from their second album ‘Too Cool To Care’, the track has already become the Boyz’ third top forty hit in the USA. It might not be groundbreaking, but the track’s electro grooves seem to be bang on trend with the current wave of all conquering electro-rap.
