We’ve already heard two singles from Coldplay’s new album – ‘Paradise’ and ‘Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall’, that were released earlier this year. Now, finally, it’s time to get your ears around the full album. The intriguingly named ‘Mylo Xyloto’ features production from Markus Dravs, Daniel Green and Rik Simpson; not to mention the additional composition by Brian Eno.
‘Mylo Xyloto’ also features one of the most unlikely guest stars you’d expect to see on a Coldplay album – none other than Bajan bombshell Rihanna. Though it’s an unexpected pairing, Rihanna definitely adds a new dimension to Coldplay track ‘Princess Of China’, though the hardest part of getting her involved, according to Chris Martin, was plucking up the courage to ask her!
“The album is designed as a whole piece. It has boy and girl lead characters and top of our list for the girl part was Rihanna… but it took a while to pluck up the courage to ask her,” says Chris Martin. “We did a show in Las Vegas and I met her and said, ‘Do you think there’s any chance?’ I was very Hugh Grant-like and spluttering about it. She has such an amazing voice and it’s so different to mine. When the vocal happened I thought ‘Wow, you sound different’ but I think that’s also because she was singing a different song to what we are used to hearing from her and it is written by a bloke from Devon.”
If you like your music packaged pretty, then the album ticks that box too – due for release on digital, CD and vinyl formats, as well as coming in a special limited edition pop-up edition. This also has a hardback book containing graffiti pop-up art, designed by David A Carter, vinyl, CD and exclusive content including photographs, excerpts from the studio diary and the band’s personal notebooks.
Although some sources have speculated that is due to by Coldplay’s last ever album, five albums in, Coldplay are still going strong. Whether they can reach the same dizzy heights again remains to be seen…
Mylo Xyloto will be released October 24/25 (UK/USA).
Coldplay have been fairly quiet over the last couple of years, but with a tasty Saturday night headlining spot scheduled for Glastonbury on the weekend what better time to release an anthemic stadium filler like ‘Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall’? Sandwiched between the twin titans of U2 on Friday and Beyoncé on Sunday, the lads are going to have to be on top form: but with a highly respectable back catalogue and two previous Glasto headline slots under their belt Coldplay have a pedigree that almost guarantees they will deliver one of the weekend’s most memorable performances. The band share the song-writing credits of ‘Every Teardrop…’ with Australia’s answer to Barry Manilow, Peter Allen. Allen’s record ‘ I Go To Rio’ influenced Chris Martin after he heard it when it appeared in the Javier Bardem film, ‘Biutiful’. However, although there are some similarities in the opening chords in reality the two songs couldn’t be more different. While the original is a disco based tropical knees up, Coldplay have gone for an epic crowd-pleasing approach that keeps the tension racked up before ending in Martin enjoying a lung-busting finale – something that’s sure to go down a storm with the muddy Somerset masses.
Currently on the top spot of the US iTunes chart, this collaboration between Justin Timberlake and rising singer songwriter Matt Morris is helping to raise much needed funds for the recent tragic events in Haiti. The song is taken from the ‘Hope for Haiti Now’ album, a compilation of covers featuring a plethora of A-List stars including Jay-Z; Coldplay; Bruce Springsteen and Madonna. Their cover of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ is currently available on iTunes. For more information regarding the Hope For Haiti Now appeal, please follow this link.
