After his last single ‘Never Stop’ featured in Apple’s recent iPad advertising campaign, Chilly Gonzales is finally enjoying the mass appeal the eccentric musician has craved/deserved. Never one to rest on his laurels, he has already lined up the next single taken from his recent album, ‘Ivory Tower’.
‘You Can Dance’ – released 23rd February – is an instantly catchy slice of sing along disco. Reminiscent of Justice’s much loved ‘D.A.N.C.E.’, it showcases that Gonzales knows just how to deliver the perfect, simple pop track.
To celebrate the track’s release, we have some exclusive signed Chilly Gonzales merchandise to give away. One lucky winner will get their mitts on a copy of ‘Ivory Tower’, his previous album ‘Solo Piano’ and an Ivory Tower Album poster; all signed by the man himself. Plus three runners up will win either a CD or a poster.

Jon Davies Competitions Chilly Gonzales

German producer and DJ Alex Ridha is more commonly known under the guise of Boys Noize. Over the past few years he has firmly established himself as one of the major players in dance music. With two albums – 2007’s ‘Oi Oi Oi’ and last year’s ‘Power’ – completed and a string of remixes for the likes of Justice, Depeche Mode and N*E*R*D*, Ridha has built a wealthy output since 2004. Recently Ridha has been getting heads together with influential UK DJ Erol Alkan, releasing two double A-side singles ‘Waves/Death Suite’ and ‘Lemonade/Avalanche’.
As well as playing DJ sets around the world, Ridha also runs Boys Noize Records – home to the likes of D.I.M., Housemeister and Siriusmo. The label has recently announced it will be starting a sub label – BNR Tracks – as an outlet for digital only releases, ensuring Boys Noize will be responsible for pushing some if the freshest tracks around.
We managed to grab a few minutes out of his hectic schedule to discuss the new sub-label, his plans for a new album and if he’ll continue to collaborate with Alkan.

Jon Davies Interviews Boys Noize, Chilly Gonzales, Erol Alkan

Chilly Gonzales is one of the most intriguing characters in music today. A (self proclaimed) musical genius from Canada, he relocated to Berlin in the nineties after his previous band disbanded. Since then Chilly Gonzales has delivered a clutch of albums which veer between rap, electro and instrumental piano. He has also collaborated, as a producer and writer, for a number of artists including Feist, Peaches and Tiga. If this wasn’t enough, Chilly also holds the Guinness World Record for the longest solo artist performance. In 2009 he entertained crowds in Paris for over 27 hours, with only a piano for company.
His current project, however, may be even more outlandish than anything he’s done before. His new album ‘Ivory Tower’ will also be accompanied by a film. About chess. In the film Gonzales and Tiga play brothers who battle each other on the chess table and also for the affections of a woman. The trailer, seen below, promises something between Dodgeball, Rocky and Purple Rain. It looks nothing short of amazing.
If that wasn’t enough, the album itself sees Gonzales working with electro producer du jour Boys Noize. The video for first single ‘I Am Europe’ (currently available to pre order on iTunes) also couples as a great teaser trailer for the film.
We were lucky to have a few minutes with the prolific musician to talk about the project and also how he managed to recover after that hand crippling world record.
