David Lynch – Good Day Today

On hearing that esteemed director David Lynch would be releasing a single we immediately thought about the eerie, orchestral music that you’d find on the soundtracks of his films. But the man behind movies such as Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet has thrown us an unexpected surprise. Record Of The Day revealed that when ‘Good Day Today’ received its first play, on US station KCRW, it was wrongly credited to dance group Underworld – which gives you an idea of the kind of electronic orientated vibe Lynch has opted for.

‘Good Day Today’ recalls the woozy beats of Caribou’s much celebrated album, ‘Swim’. It’s unsurprising that it pricked the ears of the versatile DJ Rob Da Bank who quickly signed it to his label, Sunday Best. Could this mean that we’ll see Lynch appear at next year’s Bestival? After hearing this, we wouldn’t be surprised.

Tag Of The Day! Caribou ‘Sun’

Caribou’s ‘Sun’ has undoubtedly been the one track that every hipster can agree on this summer. It’s warm and fuzzy vibe has been radiating from festivals, cool clubs and tastemaker radio stations almost constantly since April – yet the record refuses to diminish in popularity. Pitched somewhere between a minimal techno record and a synth pop ditty, the record’s ever surging swells of synthy goodness carry the listener off to a higher a higher emotional plane. Or at least that’s what it feels like after a few beers on a hot day!

The video for the track is a pretty odd one.  A middle aged female interpretive dance troupe sway in what looks like a large English house while Caribou happily chugs away in the background.  It doesn’t make much sense, but it looks pretty cool.

Caribou are currently in the middle of a European. For more info and dates head to their MySpace.

Caribou, formerly known as Manitoba, has been using a laptop to create spellbinding electronica for the past few years. However he recently upped the ante by putting a full band together to support his latest album project entitled ‘Swim’ – the follow up to Caribou’s Polaris Prize winning long player, ‘Andorra’. First track ‘Odessa’ maintains their trademark electronic-tinged, pop-rock. On first impression, it sounds like a future cult classic, likely to be considered next to ‘Melody Day’ or ‘Yeti’ as one of Caribou’s finest moments. ’Swim‘ is out via City Slang on 16th April (Germany), 19th April (UK/Europe) and on April 20th via Merge (North America).
