After making their name as the biggest Nu-disco name on the block and producing lush remixes for the likes of Grace Jones, Breakbot, Friendly Fires and Sebastian Tellier; it seemed only logical that Aeroplane would take things up a level for their debut album. However, ‘We Can’t Fly’ certainly isn’t the collection of Balearic infused synth cuts many expected. It’s a far more bold and accomplished record than their previous work hinted at.
One development that clearly influenced the album was Aeroplane scaling down to a one man operation. Aeroplane previously consisted of Stephen Fasano and Vito Deluca, but have now have amicably decided to go their separate ways; with Deluca continuing to release music under the moniker. The classically trained musician has clearly relished the challenge, creating a versatile and ambitious debut album referencing artists as varied as Tina Turner, Pink Floyd, and Giorgio Moroder – who was so taken with the album that he penned backing vocals for a re-recorded version of ‘Superstar’.
While Aeroplane will be DJing all over the world this year, Vito will also be performing the album with an expanded band later in the year. The debut single ‘We Can’t Fly’ is currently available on iTunes, while the album is due for release on September 27th through Wall of Sound.
Understandably after the onslaught of Christmas and New Year, things are moving slightly slower in Shazam HQ. One thing that has helped shake off the winter blues is Aeroplane’s glorious remix of Lindstrøm & Christabelle’s ‘Baby Can’t Stop’. The Belgian duo offers a typically stripped back cosmic rework of the song. Its spectral opening takes Christabelle’s vocal and pairs it with an irresistible bass line. The track has been a key feature of the pair’s recent DJ sets and is certain to remain in their rotation for the rest of the year.
Friendly Fires have been one of the most exciting British bands to breakthrough in recent years. Their heady mix of dance, punk-funk and just the right amount of pop music polish has won them fans from across the board. Now, fresh from a triumphant Glastonbury performance, Friendly Fires deliver their new single, ‘Kiss Of Life’. Featuring layers of South American percussion surrounded by the familiar Friendly Fires disco stomp, the track is yet another perfectly danceable pop song. Produced by Paul Epworth, who has recently worked wonders for Jack Peñate’s street cred by injecting an air of Balearic cool into his sound, the record has a rhythmic vibe that’s reminiscent of Talking Heads’ ethnic beat experiments. The new track makes up part of a special deluxe edition of their Mercury nominated, self titled album, ‘Friendly Fires’. Featuring ‘Kiss Of Life’, video footage of the band’s live show and the truly amazing Aeroplane remix of the band’s earlier single, ’Paris’, the new version of the album is likely to bring the band much wider acclaim now the Mercury Award limelight has been shone on the group.
