Kendrick Lamar – Swimming Pools

August 12th, 2012

Your average hip-hop track is normally awash with references to booze. Be it Cristal or Hennessy, rappers are forever singing the praises of getting good and hammered. Sure alcohol can be fun, but anybody who’s woken up in a strange place with a terrible hangover and no shoes knows that there can be a some negatives. Kendrick Lamar‘s latest provides a welcome corrective, highlighting the bottle’s darker side.

It’s a good job Kendrick’s staying off the sauce. He employs a dextrous and dense flow on ‘Swimming Pools’ that would probably be pretty hard to pull off if he was smashed off his face on Jaegerbombs. Unlike many currently in the game, he’s a proper rapper who seeks to impress with his verbal dexterity rather than empty boasts and tiresome bling.

Impressing with mixtapes like ‘Section.80’ he’s now on the verge of releasing his debut album ‘good kid, m.A.A.d. city’, under the watchful eye of West Coast compatriot Dr Dre. However the record turns out, one certainty is that Lamar will be dropping something new.

“I couldn’t tell you what type of sound or where I’ma be in the next five years as far as music,” he told XXL. “It’s a big difference from the next project compared to the last. And that’s what happened with this album. Going back to the neighborhood and going to different spots, chilling with my homeboys, put me back in that same space where we used to be, bringing back them thoughts, reminiscing how I was feeling. I got myself right back in that mode and I got inspired by that. So this album won’t sound like ‘Section.80’. Completely nothing like it.”

We can all drink to that. Check out the official music video below
