Kenny Chesney – Come Over
You certainly can’t fault Kenny Chesney’s industry. Since 1994 he’s released more than a dozen albums, most of which have ended up being massive hits. He’s also found time to undertake countless massive tours, playing live on an industrial scale to millions of people. He’s essentially the complete opposite of Axl Rose.
‘Come Over’ seems set to continue Chesney’s protracted hot streak. It’s a slick and soulful modern country ballad that successfully blends heartbreak and bombast. Kenny’s addressing a former paramour and slowly coming to the conclusion that breaking up was maybe not such a great idea. Starting soft and building to a suitably anthemic climax, it will almost certainly go down very well at the endless shows Chesney seems so intent on playing.
The track is the first release from his latest record, the pointedly titled ‘Welcome To The Fishbowl’. While it would be very easy to interpret the albums name as another ‘oh poor me’ whine about the pressures of being tremendously rich and incredibly famous, Chesney insists this is not the case.
“It’s about how our world is shrinking every day, and the technology we have today allowing us to do so,” he told Yahoo Music. “You don’t have to be in the public eye like me to experience the positive and negative of ‘living in a fishbowl.’ Because now our society is living in it.”
“I grew up in east Tennessee, and everybody knew everybody’s business. Because I lived in such a small town, eventually you heard all the gossip – you heard it at church, or you heard it at school, or whatever. It eventually got to you. Now, everybody knows everyone’s business and it’s instant.”
Hopefully Chesney’s latest can bring a little bit of heart and soul back into the world. If anyone’s got the stamina to pull off such a massive challenge, you suspect it’s him.
