Lighters at the ready for Jason Mraz’s wonderful and sugar-sweet ballad ‘I Won’t Give Up”. The single popped into the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 8, with the song getting a massive push from download sales as it hit the number one spot on the Billboard Digital Songs chart. “I Won’t Give Up” sold a massive 229,000 downloads in its first week, and it MRaz’s first number one on the Digital Songs chart.
A saccharine slice of radio friendly pop, “I Won’t Give Up” is prime fodder for high school proms and wedding first-dances the world over. The song is going to be the lead single from Mraz’s fourth studio album (as yet untitled). The album is due out on 8 May 2012, and will be the follow up to 2008′s We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things(which hit a high of the number three spot in the Billboard Album Chart and sold over two million copies worldwide to date).
“This new album has less horns, it’s got more piano and guitar textures,” Mraz told Billboard earlier this year. “A lot more vocal landscapes. That, to me, has always been my favorite part of making music; the singing and what voices can do and the voices singing in harmony.”
“I’m actually hoping in the future to try to pull off the record with a smaller band, but with more singers. The real basics: drums, keys, guitar, bass. But have everyone be a singer. I think our audiences, our listeners, have been mostly attracted to that throughout the years. They come and they sing. Most of our audience sings along.”
Although staunch fans of Mraz’s style might be worried about the potential change in direction, Mraz shrugs it off. “It’s just different tones, different textures. Musically, I think people are going to like it. It’s personal. It’s melodic. And it’s mellow. There’s a couple of up-tempo tunes, but mostly the rhythm of the heartbeat kind of takes precedence on this record. Medium-tempo tunes; which I love. It feels more like the pace of life. At least, based on my life and what I’ve been doing.”
Mraz is no stranger to chart success. “I’m Yours” – the lead single from his last album We Sing… – had the longest ever run on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (staying in the chart for a massive 76 weeks!). He also managed to snag two Grammys in 2010 for the same album.
So will the follow-up be any cop? Judging by the success of “I Won’t Give Up”, it looks like we might have another album that just won’t quit the charts.
