One of the few rock legends for whom the world longevity seems to have been invented is back in true ragged glory.
Neil Young’s ability to produce relevant music through the decades has remained unparalleled as the recent series of box sets collecting his archive material amply demonstrates.
His brand new album ‘Le Noise’ finds the Canadian in top form. Early reviews seem to confirm it as his best work in many years. It benefits from an excellent production by Daniel Lanois, aiming to capture the intimacy of Young’s acoustic performances, while incorporating the energy of his distorted guitar at its rawest, which has been a source of inspiration for generations of musicians since the 60’s.
‘Le Noise’ will hit the shops next week. Until then, the album can be streamed at MOJO magazine’s website and you can also watch the black & white classy video for the first single ‘Hitchhiker’ here.
Camden’s finest, N-Dubz return with their latest single ‘Best Behavior’. The track is the latest chapter in the trio’s, seemingly unstoppable, rise to mega stardom. After two platinum selling albums and a successful TV show, ‘Best Behavior’ marks the first output from the band’s recent deal with influential US Hip-Hop label Def Jam. It’s a real coup for a band who came together on a council estate and earned their craft touring around schools in the back of a van. But that’s not to say N-Dubz appear to be fish out of water. Dappy, Fazer & Tulisia have settled into the limelight with ease, using all the trademarks of an overblown hip hop style – bling, speedboats and private jets – in the video.
‘Best Behavior’ sees N-Dubz in a reflective mood, with Dappy & Co realising that all the trappings of life on the road can’t compare with the affections of their nearest and dearest. Its anthemic chorus will ensure that N-Dubz’s latest effort will continue to please their UK fanbase and could potentially see them crack America. Head here to check out the video.

Glasser is the artistic name of multi-instrumentalist Cameron Mesirow, who got us very impressed last year with her voice’s ethereal beauty and the simplicity of her first EP ‘Apply’ – she played and recorded her early work on a Mac. The record was followed by tours supporting cutting edge acts such as the Spanish’ Balearic sound ambassadors Delorean – who remixed her track ‘Glad’- Sigur Rós’ leader Jonsi and, currently, the indie collective Gayngs.
And now, Glasser has completed an excellent full-length debut titled ‘Rings’. More ambitious in scope and elaborate in arrangements thanks to the production of Foreign Born’s bass player Ariel Rechtshaid and Fever Ray’s collaborators Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid. Who aid in linking the individual songs and shaping the record up as continuous musical trip.
‘Rings’ is released on September the 28th via True Panther and it can currently be enjoyed in full through the widget below.
Back in 1964, a group of four young men from Liverpool made TV history when they appeared on the primetime US chat show ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’. When The Beatles made their American TV debut a staggering 73 million viewers tuned in; to put that in perspective that figure accounted for 86% of televisions turned on in America at that time. This was the moment that pop music crossed over into the mainstream, confirming the band’s status as a global phenomenon and bringing tracks like ‘She Loves You’, ‘Ticket To Ride’ and ‘Help!’ right into the front rooms of millions.
To celebrate the release of The Beatles legendary performances on The Ed Sullivan show, we’re giving you the chance to win one of two copies of ‘The 4 Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring The Beatles’ on DVD. The disc contains all four of the bands appearances on the show and a whole host of extras – including an interview with the band that has not been seen since 1964. All the recordings have been digitally restored, ensuring that the footage looks even better now than it did when it was first aired.
To be in with a chance to win, simply answer the question below:
2010 has been a year unusually full with grandiose concept albums. Once the preserve of 70’s prog rock bands such as Yes – who were known to churn out 8 minute keyboard epics in honour of Henry VII’s wives – the concept album has made an unlikely return. Notable 2010 concept albums include Janelle Monáe’s critically acclaimed breakthrough ‘The ArchAndroid (Suites II and II)’ – which centred on the exploits of a messianic android sent to Earth – and Big Boi’s ludicrously titled ‘Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty ‘. However, perhaps most ridiculous of all is the album from esteemed film actor Christopher Lee (he of Dracula and Lord Of The Rings Fame): who earlier this year released a long player of ‘symphonic metal’ that told the story of one of his direct descendants from the Holy Roman Empire.
Ne-Yo’s new album, ‘Libra Scale’, is yet another album with an ‘out-there’ theme. It tells the rise of R&B’s first superhero squad, The Gentlemen. A trio of R&B crooners, The Gentlemen are granted all that they’ve ever wanted – special powers, money, fame, women – the only catch is the men must use their powers to fight crime in their city and must never fall in love. Whether or not Ne-Yo is to be the next Stan Lee remains to be seen, all that’s clear is that he hasn’t lost his knack for writing ridiculously catchy urban hits. The album’s already spawned the hugely successful ‘Beautiful Monster’ and ‘Champagne Life’ with the next single, ‘One In A Million’, about to drop in a few weeks. A mid-tempo ballad with more than a hint of Michael Jackson about it, ‘One In a Million’ continues to consolidate Ne-Yo’s reputation as a ladies man par-excellence. Check out the video at the top of the post.
‘One In A Million’ and ‘Libra Scale’ are both out on 18th October.
