This month the all conquering Swedish House Mafia will host two nights at London’s Brixton Academy, on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th. The trio – made up of Steve Angello, Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso – are likely to be in an extremely jubilant mood. Following the  recent success of their single ‘One’ rocketing to the top of the Beatport Chart and receiving plays from Zane Lowe, Pete Tong and Annie Mac; the Swedish House Mafia have also just signed a deal with EMI Records- reportedly the largest electronic artist deal in the labels history.

Tickets for Saturday’s performance have sold out and the Friday show looks likely to follow suit quickly. However, here at Shazam we have a pair of tickets to give away for each night. The lucky winner and a guest will be able check out what is sure to be one of the dance events of the year, plus you will also be the proud owner of an exclusive Swedish House Mafia goody bag. Containing a SHM hoodie, t-shirt, trucker cap and poster.

Shazam Meets…Langhorne Slim

May 17th, 2010
Comments Off

Langhorne Slim is a singer songwriter from Pennsylvania currently on tour throughout Europe in support of his new album, ‘Be Set Free’. Shazam were lucky enough to catch up with the man himself at London’s Borderline to talk tours, moving house and learning to play guitar.

You have been on tour; first Germany, now the UK, and then onto the rest of Europe. How is it going?

It’s been great so far, I think it’s our best tour in Europe to date. We are a little over half way done then we are off back to the States to do a few festivals over the summer.

Are you looking forward to going home to the States?

Well I’m not in a huge rush but in two weeks it will be time. I’m also moving house so I’m looking forward to that.

Moving house – that’s supposedly one of the most stressful things you can do. You sure you’re looking forward to it?

I feel very peaceful about it yeah. I’m not doing it right now though so maybe just the fantasy is delightful and the reality will be stressful.

How did the other UK dates go? I saw you played Newcastle for example?

The shows have been going great, still not quite as many people as we would like to see, but the people that are there are beautiful people. They are really getting it – which is great as we have been over here five or six times so it’s time for people to get it.

Wolf + Lamb Experience In London

May 14th, 2010

To borrow a line from Zoolander’s Mugatu, Wolf + Lamb “are so hot right now”. The New York based DJ duo and dance label have been turning plenty of heads with their disco, pop and nu-wave referencing techno sound for the past two years. But in recent months they’ve become the name to drop if you want to seem cool in front of electronic music beard strokers. From their Brooklyn base of the Marcy Hotel, Wolf + Lamb’s main instigators (Zev and Gadi Mizrahi) have built up a uniquely hedonistic and musically scattergun approach to making people dance. A string of highly rated singles, stand out sets at The Miami WMC and an amazing installation at last year’s Burning Man Festival – that blurred the lines between art and dancing-your-ass off – are all factors that have helped spread the W+L mantra. Add to this glowing testimonials about the Wolf + Lamb parties from some of the world’s most party hardened DJ’s – Seth Troxler and Jamie Jones to name two – and you have some idea why there’s such a buzz about the collective at the moment.

Obviously this ‘of the moment’ hype is something that’s hard to live up to. However, The ‘Wolf + Lamb Experience’ in London managed to exceed the hyperbole. Comprising of a showcase of the label’s most exciting acts, the night managed to boil down many of the most exciting facets of dance music into a well rounded whole. Taking place in a ramshackle art gallery on the outskirts of London’s trendy Shoreditch; the venue’s low ceilings, grimy exposed brick work and generally dilapidated demeanour were the antithesis of a swish superclub. The lighting summed up the lo-fi feeling of the night. A lonely lampshade and a red neon sign with “This must be the place” (a reference to a Talking Heads track) were the only bright spots cutting through the sweaty fug of the venue’s basement.

Funeral Party Hit The UK!

May 13th, 2010

Last night we checked out one of LA’s hottest new prospects – Funeral Party. After featuring the band on the Shazam Blog a few months ago, we’ve been glued to their MySpace waiting for some UK dates. Thankfully the band were picked up by Surfer Blood as support for a handful of UK dates including a show at The Garage in London.

We’re pleased to say that all the frantic energy of their songs transfers fully to their live show, with lead singer Chad Elliott on particularly animated form throughout the performance. Tracks such as the anthemic ‘Finale’ and forthcoming single ‘NYC Moves To The Sound Of LA’ draw comparisons to the spiky guitar sound  popularised by The Strokes; albeit with an exuberant  injection of punk-funk style bass. Expect to hear a lot more from these soon.

Shazam Meets… Kids In Glass Houses

May 13th, 2010

Welsh pop punkers Kids In Glass Houses – who took their moniker from a Glassjaw song – are currently trekking around the country in support of their latest album, ‘Dirt’. We caught up with guitarist Iain just before their sold out show out London’s famous Koko in Camden. After negotiating our way through the rapid queue of fans outside; we chatted with Iain about the tour, supporting Stereophonics and the perils of Travelodge Olympics!

You guys play live and tour frequently, are you looking forward to headlining Koko?

Yeah – we haven’t had a London show for a while, not a headline show anyway, so we are really looking forward to it. Also we have been coming to Koko for years to see other bands so it’s a seminal one for us!

Last time you played Koko we heard you guys got a little bit too drunk, what’s the story there?

Oh yeah – we all got wasted. It was a Kerrang club night and it was one of our first big London shows and we kinda celebrated a bit too much before we went on. We didn’t realise at club Kerrang the band goes on really late so we thought we’d have a few and then it turned out we weren’t playing till 1:30am… We were ruined by then! But, we learnt from our mistake.

Did you get any bad press from that incident?

Nah we got everyone at Kerrang drunk as well so they thought it was awesome!

What is the best show you have ever played?

Probably a couple of nights ago, we played Nottingham Rock City. We supported Lostprophets there in February, in the big room and they sold it out. Then like two months later we sold out the big room ourselves – that was a pretty breathtaking moment. Also growing up we would see bands on posters and they would be playing Astoria and Rock City – so it’s one of those venues you want as a notch on your belt.

Alicia Keys Covers Blondie For The ‘Sex & The City 2′ Soundtrack

May 12th, 2010

The sequel to one of the most successful chick flicks ever, ‘Sex and the City 2’, is coming to a cinema near you very shortly; with its unbeatable recipe of urban romance wrapped in designer clothes. The well-known four characters from the original TV series will be joined by a cast of celebrities, including cameos by Penelope Cruz and Miley Cyrus.

While the film is likely to smash box office records, its domain may not stop at the theatres and could well jump into the charts thanks to a soundtrack packed with surprises, courtesy of a top selection of A-list divas.

Fergie was responsible for the first movie’s main theme and this time Alicia Keys does the honours with a funky rendition of Blondie’s classic ‘Rapture’. The soulful singer is joined on the tracklist by Liza Minnelli –who has also a small role in the film- covering ‘Single Ladies’ and the four main actresses doing the same with Helen Reddy’s ‘I’m A Woman’. Other highlights include the return of Dido and a duet between US/UK Idol winners Jennifer Hudson & Leona Lewis.

Tag Of The Day! The Drums ‘Forever & Ever Amen’

May 12th, 2010
Comments Off

The Drums continue their quest for domination in 2010 with the release of a  new video for ‘Forever & Ever Amen’.  Taken from their eponymous debut album, the track has all the hallmarks of their trademark sound - juxtaposing jangly surf rock guitars and icy synth lines. The video sees lead singer Jonathan Pierce display his knack for angular dance moves, while the rest of the band diligently hold the back line.

The band are currently supporting Florence & The Machine on her Cosmic Love tour and look set to continue their hectic schedule over the summer. With US and European shows plus several festival dates lined up, you’ll be sure to have this infectious track stuck in your head for a good while yet.
