Record Store Day 2010
Record Store Day 2010 is the music industry’s way of reminding everyone just how great independent record stores really are. Although the digital music revolution has greatly increased the availability and choice of music on offer, there’s still something intangibly magical about going into a record store and physically flicking through stacks of records – occasionally uncovering an unexpected gem that you probably wouldn’t discover any other way. In fact, some of the greatest moments in hip hop and dance music have sprung from artists diggin’ in the crates: just take DJ Shadow (above), The Avalanches or Fat Boy Slim for example.
Now in its third year, Record Store Day catalyses independent record stores, labels and artists to work together. Encompassing live performances and exclusive releases that will only be available at selected Record Store Day outlets, the event seems to be inclusive of all tastes in music. Exclusive releases made available for this edition include work by artists as diverse as Bruce Springsteen, Beach House, Beastie Boys, Deerhoof, Devo, Elvis Presley, Fela Kuti, Flaming Lips, Goldfrapp, Jamie Liddell, Jimi Hendrix, La Roux, MGMT, Muse and Rolling Stones – many of which have never been available before.
Added to that there will be a series of in store shows that take place in 19 countries. Highlights of the London leg include performances at Rough Trade East by bands such as Ash, Sweet Billy Pilgrim, Caribou and Magic Numbers.
