Shazam Around The World: Exotic 60′s & Spiritual 70′s
The last few weeks haven’t been short of thrills for music fans.
Beginning with ‘Tumbélé: Biguine, Afro & Latin sounds from the French Caribbean, 1963-74′ a festive anthology of songs from Guadalupe and Martinica taken from the region’s golden musical decade. Focused in the common Afro-Latin influence that’s shared around the area, it’s a look at a musical heritage often ignored due to the wealth of influential rhythms coming from their surrounding neighbors. Some of its highlights can be checked here.
The Sublime Frequencies label specializes in world music pushing the boundaries between local folk and international rhythms. Years ago they released a much talked-about compilation of 60’s pop from Thailand. The exotic element of Asian music mixed with the huge influence that Western popular music had at the time offered surprisingly enjoyable results. Applying the same concept, they now travel down to Singapore for another groovy collection of poptastic beats in ‘Singapore A Go-Go’.
And back in the USA, another cult label specialist on digging in the vaults of the most obscure soul, The Numero Group, have put together ‘Good God! Born Again Funk’. This is an album worth of songs combining the long standing spiritual tradition in the African-American community with the earthier, more contemporary sounds of classic soul and funk - to mind blowing effect.
All three of them would be worthy additions to any good record collection.
