New Music First! The Knife ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’

January 6th, 2010

The Knife’s much anticipated music for the opera ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ directed by the Danish group Hotel Pro-Forma is finally seeing the light of day.

The studio version of the opera, based on Darwin’s ‘The Origin of Species’, was recorded in collaboration with Berlin-based leftfield artists DJ Mt. Sims and Planningtorock. Before its composition, Olof Dreijer went into a thorough research phase that involved a field recording workshop in the Amazon in order to throw some nature sounds in to the mix for the ground-breaking opus.

Although The Knife admit they didn’t know anything about opera before this project, they wanted to approach the work with the same way Darwin approached his landmark studies with; thinking about the “diversity of everything” in a non-hierarchical way.

‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ debuted on the stage in Copenhagen on the 2nd September 2009. It was received with critical acclaim for pushing forward the boundaries of operatic art. Further performances will take place in Athens (8-9 Jan); Stockholm (29 Jan-1 Feb) and Munster (5 June) with more to be announced.

Listen below to the record’s first taster, ‘Colouring of Pigeons’ -inspired by Darwin’s studies of those birds which led to his discoveries about genetic transfer within generations. The track is also available for download upon signing up to The Knife mailing list at their website.

“Tomorrow, In A Year” will be released the 1st of March 2010 in the UK on Rabid / Brille Records
