U2 Announced for Glastonbury 2010 – who’s next?

Yesterday Irish stadium fillers U2 were announced as one of the three headline acts for Glastonbury Festival in 2010. Next year’s festival will be the 40th year in which thousands of music fans invade a usually serene and peaceful farm in Somerset. Festival organiser Michael Eavis had previously hinted that he would be pulling out all the stops to ensure 2010′s celebrations would go off with a bang and with U2 he has secured one of the world’s most popular acts. Despite filling arenas around the world, U2 have never played Glastonbury before so it’s an almost certainty that their set will be one of the most memorable of the weekend.
While this news proved the perfect Monday morning antidote for many ticket holders, some of the festivals regular goers may be slightly less than enthused about the prospect of seeing Bono strut along the Pyramid Stage. However the key to Glastonbury’s success has always been its versatility, while U2 are the only band announced so far; it’s safe to assume Michel Eavis already has his eye on a few other potential targets. We weigh up a few of the other possible contenders…
Daft Punk
During their ‘Alive’ tour, Daft Punk wowed crowds across the globe with their very own Egyptian inspired stage setup – which led to the obvious question, when will they headline Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage? The enigmatic French duo have not played the festival since the 90’s and with their soundtrack to the forthcoming Tron sequel due next year, Daft Punk could be the perfect choice to silence complaints about the festivals preference for rock headliners.
David Bowie
The Thin White Duke’s closing performance in 2000 was dubbed by many as one of the finest performances in the festival’s history. The latter half of this decade has seen the singer keep a relatively low profile, could he be tempted by the festival again?
Rolling Stones
While their name is often mentioned in connection with a headline slot, this year may just be the year when Eavis attracts the great Rock ‘n’ Roll circus to Worthy Farm. But would the seasoned veterans brave the unruly festival conditions?
Beastie Boys
In 2008 Jay-Z performed a jaw dropping headline set that smashed any notions that hip hop didn’t have a place on the Pyramid stage. Beastie Boys certainly have the presence and back catalogue to hold the attention. With the news that member Adam Yauch is on the road to recovery after a cancerous tumor removed from his salivary gland, 2010 could see the Brooklyn 3 piece appear.
