The re-issue comes with a packed bonus disc of material and we have three copies to give away. To win simply send your answer and address to competitions@shazamteam.com

Shazam Meets… Q-TIP.

QTIP

For fans of hip-hop, an artist like Q-Tip needs no introduction. After forming A Tribe Called Quest in 1985 with fellow rapper Phife Dawg and producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad, the group found massive success and acclaim throughout the nineties. Along with fellow New York natives De La Soul, the band developed a style of hip-hop that shied away from the masculine, gangster bravado that was associated with the genre at the time. Their intelligent lyrics and jazz infused beats were, and still continue to be, an inspiration for many. From their debut ‘People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm’ – including the well known singles ‘Can I Kick It’ and ‘Bonita Applebum’ – through to their final long player ‘The Love Movement’, A Tribe Called Quest pushed the boundaries of hip hop and paved the way for artists such as KanYe West, Common, The Roots and Pharcyde to name just a few.

After A Tribe Called Quest split up in the late Nineties, Q-Tip delivered his debut album ‘Amplified’. While it could be argued tracks such as ‘Breathe & Stop’ and ‘Vivrant Thing’ were more commercial than anything that Tribe had released, the album was by no means a feckless attempt at mainstream success. After this fans were forced to wait until 2008 for its official follow up, ‘The Renaissance’, an album that was again greeted extatically by critics and fans. But fans of the rapper knew that the hiatus of new music was not down to the man himself, but record company wrangling.

‘Kamaal The Abstract’ was originally set for release in 2001, but his label at the time refused to release it. Deemed too ahead of its time, the record now draws comparisons with Gnarls Barkley, Andre 3000 and N*E*R*D, artists who have all found success since ‘Kamaal’ was originally set for release.  After much delay the album has finally been released on RCA , although now in a  remixed and re-mastered state. We were lucky enough to grab an interview with the legendary MC and get his thoughts on the album’s release, his plans for the future and chat about the forthcoming A Tribe Called Quest movie.

Tag Of The Day! Alexandra Burke ‘Bad Boys’

burke4

In spite of the huge commercial success of her first single ‘Hallelujah’, Alexandra Burke still managed to draw heaps of criticism from across the board. Fans of Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley bemoaned Burke’s super emotional rendition of the melancholy classic; and the inclusion of a Mariah Carey-esque gospel choir was just too much to bare for many lovers of the original versions. Meanwhile, Alexandra Burke also faced criticism from some X-Factor fans for being too similar to Leona Lewis whilst others took fire at the X Factor itself for effectively ruining the race for the Christmas number one in the UK.

However, Alexandra Burke’s latest single is already being met with widespread acclaim. Coming more from the Girls Aloud school of past reality show winners rather than the Shane Ward or Michelle McManus, ‘Bad Boys’ is a stomping mix of Britney Spears’ ‘Womanizer’, four to the floor euro pop and catchy rap lyrics delivered by international chart topper Flo Rida. With its super strong melodic top line and thumping 140 BPM pace the record is about as far away from ‘Hallelujah’ as possible. With a much hyped album already in the can, ‘Bad Boys’ seems to be just the tonic needed to set her detractors straight and pave the way for a Leona style invasion of the US.

Shazam Goes to Burningman Festival.

September 16th, 2009

jase 1

Shazam’s Jason Keck  gives us the low down from Burningman, one of the world’s most spectaular, psychedelic and all round mind blowing music events:

Having just gotten back from Black Rock City, Nevada USA site of the annual Burningman Festival, people haven’t stopped asking me, “How was it? What was it like?” So here goes…

I’ve included some pictures to help, but they don’t do it justice. Burningman is more than the art and costumes you see in the photos, it’s the creativity, the innovation and the production level required to put on such an amazing event. It’s also about the music, mostly electronic, but live shows as well. There is no line up, just camp after camp of some guy or girl mixing their favorite tracks and the best ones tend to draw the biggest crowds. A few big names were on show this year including Armen Van Burren and Carl Cox, but the best set I heard was by a DJ named “Mike” from Victoria Canada who played on the Esplanade at 2 am on Tuesday night. We rocked up after a night of cruising the playa on our bikes and decided that THIS was the place to end our night, dancing till our feet hurt. We followed Mike’s gigs that week and heard two more great shows from him by the end of the festival.

Burningman is about the community experience which is so far removed from big city life the most people can’t even imagine the level of civic responsibility and neighborly good will that is such a differentiated part of the experience.

So don’t ask, just go. But be prepared. Bring everything you need to survive for the week including food, water, a dust mask and goggles. Take a tent or a motor home, but make sure to leave no trace and, above all, don’t be a spectator. Burningman is the amazing festival that it is because people get involved and contribute by do the things they enjoy doing, amazingly, for the benefit and enjoyment of everyone else there. Contribute in any way you want, but make sure you contribute.

Win Sweet Temper Trap Stuff!

temptrap2

Aussie rockers Temper Trap have certainly made a splash in the UK. Not only has their debut single ‘Sweet Disposition’ punctured the UK top 20, but the record has been practically omnipresent on television screens across the country. It can be heard on Sky Sports’ latest advert, where Jose Mourinho waxes lyrical about the joys of the English league despite the fact he now resides in Italy, and has also been used heavily throughout the latest series of Big Brother.

This constant coverage, coupled with the immediate catchiness of the opening riffs of ‘Sweet Disposition’, has put the record in the UK’s top two most tagged tracks for the last month– quite remarkable for a band that has only just started to gain heavy rotation on Radio 1.

To mark the release of the band’s debut album, ‘Conditions’, we have a bunch of top quality Temper Trap merch to giveaway including T Shirt’s , limited signed 7” picture disc vinyl and an exclusive signed copy of the band’s debut LP.

You’re Fired!

Shazam HQ was put through the important, but ever so slightly annoying, rigmarole of a company fire drill this morning. Whilst waiting to return to the office we began listing songs that could fit the situation and suddenly realised how many great songs have been written by pyrophiliacs – that’s lovers of fire for the uninitiated.

Other notable tracks could have been:
Kasabian – ‘Fire’, Sean Kingston – ‘Fire Burning’, The Prodigy – ‘Fire’, Jimi Hendrix – ‘Fire’, Deep Purple – ‘Burn’, Billy Joel – ‘We Didn’t Start The Fire’, Ash – ‘Burn Baby Burn’, Johnny Cash – ‘Ring Of Fire’, The Cult – ‘Firewoman’, Talking Heads – ‘Burning Down The House’, Ferry Corsten – ‘Fire’, The Pointer Sisters – ‘Fire’…. We could carry on.
