Jay Sean & Lil Wayne retain the number one spot in the tag chart for the second week with ‘Down’. Meanwhile, a new entry comes this week from Jason Derulo whose new track ‘Whatcha Say’ enters the chart at number 6; despite sounding remarkably similar to Keri Hilson’s ‘Knock You Down’ which sits just behind the track at number 7.

Tag Of The Day. Jamie T – ‘Chaka Demus’

August 20th, 2009
Comments Off

‘Chaka Demus’ is the latest single taken from Jamie T‘s forthcoming album ‘Kings & Queens’. After releasing his Mercury nominated debut ‘Panic Prevention’ in 2007, fans of the South London singer have been salivating at the prospect of new material. After the fantastic ‘Sticks ‘n’ Stones’ hinted that he would have no problem following his widely praised debut, ‘Chaka Demus’ also shows that ‘Kings & Queens’ is unlikely to suffer from the dreaded second album syndrome. The song takes its title from the revered Reggae musician and one half of 90’s one hit wonder duo Chaka Demus and Pliers. While the track unfortunately doesn’t feature a cameo from Chaka himself, it’s clear Jamie’s reggae tinged indie has had some influence from the Caribbean songsmith .

‘Kings & Queens’ is released on 7th September. Jamie and his band The Pacemakers are currently playing across the UK - for more info head to his website .

Candi’s Got The Love

Candi 009

Synched to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Christopher Street riots in New York and respectfully borrowing its name from Harvey Milk, the gay rights campaigner infamously assassinated in San Francisco in the 70’s, London festival ‘Milk In The Park’ hoped to mix politics and partying whilst delivering music and happy times. Entertainment on the day included everything from the niche, but ever-popular Horse Meat Disco crew to other dance tents playing a range of styles from retro Chicago house to 90’s mainstream hands-in-the-air pop.  In the main arena, London’s Deputy Mayor, Richard Barnes, felt it necessary and rightly so, to spell out the significance in gay history of the afore-mentioned events before the performance of top-billed disco queen, Candi Staton – ironically on first, due to her commitments north of the border later that day.

Following a disco set by Horse Meat DJ Severino & a hyped introduction by a resplendent drag queen, Ms. Staton, looking immaculate in an all-black number, arrived delicately on stage to a mainly over-30’s whooping crowd, who courteously gave her a tumultuous welcome in the process.  Calm as you like, looking genuinely pleased to sing to her adoring fans, she started with the Bees Gees classic ‘Nights On Broadway’; an impeccable choice for an opening song: vocally perfect, smiling, dancing, waving, every step of the way encouraging participation from the enraptured audience.  The middle section of the set included some unusual offerings. From her rendition of Tammy Wynette’s ‘Stand By Your Man’ through to two Elvis’ hits – which she did indeed cover back in the day, but seemed a downbeat choice for such an occasion.  Having said that, one of the highlights of the afternoon was seeing the genuine emotion she displayed during her performance of the civil rights song ‘In The Ghetto’.  Soon back on track and raising the temperature once again, she stormed through extended versions of her biggest hits:  ‘Victim’ nearly brought the tent down and ‘Young Hearts (Run Free)’ & ‘You Got The Love’ were every bit as perfect as the day outside.

Candi delivered many words of wisdom during the show.  The ones that probably stuck most with the exiting crowd were that perhaps in this big, bad world we should learn to love each other more!  On the basis of her performance & the joy that it was to behold, we’ll give it a real good try!

Tag Of The Day. Friendly Fires ‘Kiss Of Life’

August 19th, 2009

Friendly Fires have been one of the most exciting British bands to breakthrough in recent years. Their heady mix of dance, punk-funk and just the right amount of pop music polish has won them fans from across the board. Now, fresh from a triumphant Glastonbury performance, Friendly Fires deliver their new single, ‘Kiss Of Life’.
Featuring layers of South American percussion surrounded by the familiar Friendly Fires disco stomp, the track is yet another perfectly danceable pop song. Produced by Paul Epworth, who has recently worked wonders for Jack Peñate’s street cred by injecting an air of Balearic cool into his sound, the record has a rhythmic vibe that’s reminiscent of Talking Heads’ ethnic beat experiments.
The new track makes up part of a special deluxe edition of their Mercury nominated, self titled album, ‘Friendly Fires’. Featuring ‘Kiss Of Life’, video footage of the band’s live show and the truly amazing Aeroplane remix of the band’s earlier single, ’Paris’, the new version of the album is likely to bring the band much wider acclaim now the Mercury Award limelight has been shone on the group.

Shazam Around The World. Mungolian Jet Set

mungolian-jet-set-sky

Mungolian Jet Set may well be one of the world’s hardest bands to pin down and decipher. Far from being actual jet setters or hailing the central Asian country of Mongolia, as the name may suggest, Mungolian Jet Set are actually Norwegian DJ Pal “Strangefruit” Nyhus and his collaborators Knut Sævik and Reidar Skår.
Mixing jazz, disco, afro-beats, techno and folk with a hefty dose of tongue in cheek prog-rock epicness, Mongolian Jet Set make unclassifiable and often conceptually insane records. Add to this a whole range of pseudo mystical vernacular coupled with a load of crazy far Eastern imagery and you get one of the most un-pigeon-holeable groups on the planet.

Their latest release is a collection of their finest remixes including their re-works of tracks from Lindstrøm, The Shortwave Set and PizzyYelliot – whose cover of Bob Marley’s ‘Could You Be Loved’ is nothing short of deranged. Entitled ‘We Gave It All Away, Now We Are Taking It Back’, the record has already had serious props from dance music bible Resident Advisor who have hailed it as one of the finest releases of the year.
If you’ve never experienced the Mungolian Jet Set sound check out this video, which throws together (deep breath) afro drumming, dancing aliens, a keyboard thwacking Norwegian Spaceman, a chanting face painted cowboy, a two minute jazz piano solo and a pummeling disco bass.

New Music First! The Return of Vitalic

vitalic_new_image_1
Back in 2001, Pascal Arbez-Nicolas aka Vitalic unleashed the ‘Poney EP’ on unsuspecting dancefloors around the world. The EP contained the frantic ‘La Rock 01’; a track that became a staple in a countless number of DJ’s and showcased a sound that would go on to influence both producers such as Soulwax and Justice, as well as über chic French labels like Ed Banger and Kitsuné. It was a long four year wait before Vitalic delivered his debut album, ‘OK Cowboy’. However upon hearing the engine rev that signalled the start of standout single ‘My Friend Dario’, it was obvious that it had been worth the wait.
Never one to rush things, despite regularly making live appearances across the globe, we’ve had to endure another four year wait for the latest Vitalic album. ‘Flashmob‘ is released through PIAS on the 28th of September – containing 13 new tracks that promise to reignite the slightly flagging Electro scene. Added to this, there is also a new EP dropping the 10th August entitled ‘Disco Terminateur’, perfect who need their fix of jarring electro post haste.

Tag Of The Day. Whitney Houston ‘Million Dollar Bill’

August 17th, 2009
Comments Off

After several years in the celebrity wilderness battling with drug and marriage woes; it looks as though Whitney Houston is on the brink of one of the most sensational comebacks in recent memory.
Her new album, entitled ‘I Look To You’, pulls in some of the biggest names in urban music to help bring a modern edge to proceedings with Stargate, Akon and Alicia Keys all contributing to the album. If early indications are anything to go by, it would seem that Whitney’s nailed a sound that will appeal both to her older fans and the younger pop/R&B audience.
The most recent single to surface, ‘Million Dollar Bill’, is an up-tempo disco groover written by Alicia Keys and produced, quite surprisingly by Swizz Beats – a man who made his name making hardcore hip-hop beats with DMX and Busta Rhymes, but now favours a smooth Philly Disco influenced R&B sound on this track. Cheekily, the record takes a huge chunk from a much overlooked cut from Lolleta Holloway; a singer who, dare we say it, could be one of the few artists who can outdo Whitney when it comes to sheer vocal power.
