 Deerhunter 9

This week London promoters Upset the Rhythm delivered possibly one of the finest line-ups of bands to grace any stage this year. Brad Cox’s Deerhunter headlined and while the Atlanta band had the crowd enraptured throughout their set, this was a gig where the support bands weren’t to be ignored whilst shuffling by the bar. Opening the show were Crystal Antlers, whose mixture of pysch and punk translated far better live than it does on their debut album ‘Tentacles’.  Next up were fellow LA residents HEALTH, who are slowly building a reputation for being one of the most ferocious acts around. Built around relentless drums beats, HEALTH craft a sonic assault that should see them more than hold their own when they tour with Nine Inch Nails later this year.

While Deerhunter’s set was hit by sound problems – bassist Lockett Pundt’s guitar seemed to cause him no end of issues – this clearly didn’t affect them. While they have been known for their outlandish outfits on stage, this time Deerhunter let the music take centre stage. Highlights included tracks from last year’s masterful double album Microcastle/Weird Era Cont.
